The message is a simple one. Do whatever you have to to get rid of that 'old' appliance, TV, radio, whatever... to make room for the new one. But what if there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with your old Fridge, or old Washer? What then. I know it's only a commercial, and it's meant to be fun, and entertaining... the problem... this IS HOW WE AS A SOCIETY THINK, and the way we have been programmed to think. This is how we've become a wasteful society. Little messages like these. Companies making us feel worthless, or not part of society by not contributing to the product index. Making you feel 'different' if you didn't have the newest and latest appliance / product. Why do you think there is a new IPOD every 6 months, and we EAT THEM UP the minute they come out? It's called mindless thinking. We are so programmed, that marketers don't even have to sell you that you need this new gadget. They just show you what it looks like in a commercial, announcing it's arrival, and we FLOCK to get them. They don't tell you WHY you need to upgrade, or why you need to throw out that old one... they just show you the item, and WE BUY with out question. We beg, borrow, and steal for them. Banks have gone under because they over lent to US. Yet, we see nothing wrong with this way of thinking. The world is starting to follow our lead, and U.S. corporations are REAPING the rewards. Yes, it's a brilliant plan. The problem... it's destroying us. Our environment, our world, our finances, our future, our souls. Is it worth it? We have to say enough already. The producer of this commercial could have easily gone a different route, brought a positive message, provided end users with alternatives to destruction, and still sold a couple of thousand appliances in the process. Why not show a lady calling up the Salvation Army, and showing their truck come to pick up the older appliance. Or show another couple having a yard sale, where all their older appliances have a big $1 sign on them - allowing poor families to afford a small luxury for themselves. Or showing a father and son fixing an old TV set, then taking it down to a church to donate. Of course, after all this gift giving, you show the people feeling good about themselves, get a hug from someone who appreciates the gifts, then they're off into the sunset with Circuit City or WalMart in the background to go buy themselves that new appliance they wanted! That's it. Simple. Responsible. Effective. Move emotions in the viewer - that's what sells products. Emotion. So, why not make them feel a POSITIVE EMOTION? All I'm saying is that why can't we change our messages to incorporate some sort of meaning. We have to start the cleansing process, and undo as much of the damage that we have done to our world. Corporations can MAKE money on good stuff. Why do they choose to market and promote the stuff that is destructive to our world and society? Money? Money comes from anything. But these companies, TIME AND TIME AND TIME again choose the destructive path. Nestle tricks poor pregnant mothers is 3rd world countries to rely on their milk products to nourish their newborn infants. The problem.... there is ABSOLUTELY NO NUTRITIONAL VALUE in the milk they market. It's powder, and you just add water, but it's of such poor quality, that the water is the only ingredient with any sort of value in it. Now, why can't Nestle, with all it's might and power, put out a product that actually nourishes the infant? Why spend $10B on developing a product that does nothing -vs- a product that does something. Money is money. It comes from both directions. Why not choose the right direction. This is just one of THOUSANDS of examples. When will you corporate executives, bankers, and marketing companies catch up with the rest of society? I apologize for ranting, but I can't take our society any more. Of course, I am just as guilty as everyone else. But, I've had enough, and I am taking steps to change the way me and my family live. I am also taking steps in the way we do business. We've always recycled our electronic waste, but we need to do more. I'll post more on what we are doing here, and maybe provide you with some tips as well. What are you going to do? Regards. - OPTiC. |
